Books to Savor: What You Should Read Next

Besides loving fashion and pop culture, I am also an avid reader. I love delving into a new story and getting to know the characters and their lives. Or reading a memoir and visualizing the person's life. There are so many places books will take you if you just open one and read (which sadly people do less and less now).  Every once in awhile, I will write about a book that I read that stayed with me and had to be shared.

Here's a book to get you through the weekend:

Behind the Beautiful Forevers is a heart-breaking, brilliant book by Katherine Boo that will make you step back and appreciate what you have been given and (hopefully) make you more sensitive to the plight of others. It is a few years old but if you haven't had the chance to read this book, go out and get it now, you will not regret it. The story follows Abdul Husain, a teenager living in the Annawadi slum outside of Mumbai Airport with his family. Abdul is a garbage picker and trades and sells what he finds; his dream is to make his family standing rise higher within the slum. However, Abdul is robbed of his dream when he is accused of committing a horrific crime. I don't want to give away anymore of the plot because there are twists and twirls that shocked me to the core. This intense, gut-wrenching book is non-fiction. Katherine Boo spent years in the  Annawadi slums getting to know the characters she would write about  and immersing herself into their world and everyday antics. This book reads like a novel but when you're finished, knowing that it's true and people have suffered these monstrosities, your outlook on life will be changed forever and the people in this book will never leave your heart or mind.
